Prodect Rec: Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil (plus giveaway!)

by NYCEsthy

If you have dry winter skin like I do, Weleda’s Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil is a little miracle in a bottle.

Weleda was tickled with my kids rave review of their Calendula Cream Bath. So they asked if I would be interested in doing a product giveaway from their new Pomegranate Regenerating line. They sent along a bottle of their Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil  for me to try, and it could not have arrived at a better time.

The skin on my legs were such a flakey mess that I couldn’t even wax them properly. After one use, the skin flakes disappeared, even 24 hours without reapplying. The oil absorbed quickly, and did not leave a greasy film (my least favorite side effect of a body oil). The scent is light and lemon grassy, which I really loved. Although, sadly, the beautiful smell disappeared after a few hours (or I sniffed it right off my arm).

Punicic acid, found in pomegranate seed oil, is the real workhorse of the antioxidants. This omega 5 oil has been proven in clinical studies to be an anticancer agent, hence the recent push to injest more pomegranate. In the skin, a 2006 study from the University of Michigan Medical School, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, showed  that punicic acid promoted the regeneration of the epidermis.

I was so impressed with the results that I tried it on the kid. Being Weleda, I knew it would be gentle enough for her skin, and that we wouldn’t need to decontaminate her from an over abundance of chemicals after. And that’s where Weleda really won me over. As I blogged here last week, my kid has keratosis pilaris and I have not been able to find anything to tame her KP. After using the Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil on her for a few days, I noticed a reduction in the chicken bumps on her arms.

I inquired with Weleda about this, and they had not heard of the Pomegranate line helping with KP, although I am pretty certain that the punicic acid is breaking down the hardened keratin in the clogged follicles while the super moisturizing oils like jojoba are keeping the skin soft and limber.  I want to point out that Weleda does not make any claims that the product banishes KP, but was my experience using the oil.

So this is, hands down, the best body moisturizer I have ever used. It’s a fantastic foil for winter ravaged skin, and I am really excited to offer this as the first Beautyology giveaway!

Leave a comment below this post to enter. The names will be entered in Random.org to pick the winner. You have until Wednesday, December 16 to enter! Good luck!

FCC disclosure: Weleda sent me a full size product to try, and are providing the winner with a full size bottle of the oil.

I love Weleda! I use the skin food for my elbows and I like the cleaning lotion, toner, and moisturizer for my face.

Theresa December 9, 2009 at 1:05 am

Eager to try and also to let my sister know, she and her kids all have superdry sensitive skin.

A Modern Hell December 9, 2009 at 1:16 am

Rockin’ blog. Can I use this on my face? This winter air is killing me.

Jessica December 9, 2009 at 9:16 am

I haven’t found a pomegrante product I don’t like–it is a miracle fruit. Besides my elbows, my legs get so dry and itchy in this weather. Would love to try it.

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 9:51 am

Hey A Modern Hell
This is not recommended for face, and I wouldn’t use it there! There really isn’t anything in the ingredients that are irritating, but it does have a fairly strong essential oil fragrance, which can cause irritation. It’s hard to recommend products without knowing your skin type and conditions, but what are you currently using? Except for the most oily skin, in the winter, we ALL need something richer and creamier on the face, to both add moisture and, more importantly, lock it in. So you want a product that will form a barrier on your skin. And are you sure it’s your moisturizer? It could be that your cleanser is stripping the natural oil from your face, which is contributing to the dryness. This is more common than people think. If your skin feels super tight after cleansing, it’s drying you out.
If you come back with a little more info (skin type, current products used, etc), I can try to help!
Thanks!

Wow, this sounds really nice! I love Weleda and would love to try this!

Daisy December 9, 2009 at 11:01 am

Been a fan of Weleda’s products for years now! Thanks for the give away. Indeed, pomegranate is a miracle fruit. Body oils have been the greatest for deep moisturizing. Tip to locking in: skin is still slightly damp. Pat dry body with the towel, never rub. Immediately place a few drops of oil on hands and concentrate long circular strokes over the body toward heart starting from the feet and hands up. Enjoy, relax and relish the healing!

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 11:08 am

Hi Daisy
Yes! Thanks for the application tip, and I should have added that in my review… Slightly damp is indeed the key! I got carried away and grabbed the bottle while I was soaking wet, forgetting to towel off a bit, and while it did not effect the outcome, my drying time was definitely impaired!

Tini December 9, 2009 at 11:16 am

Wow, this stuff looks great! Great review!

Mari December 9, 2009 at 11:26 am

I’m sure Weleda is making the other guys in the industry quite nervous and I’m glad! Everon Lip balm was my very first Weleda product and always go back to it when I need it. Can’t wait to try their Pomegranate line.

Thank you for this opportunity, BeautyOlogy!

tracey December 9, 2009 at 11:29 am

Sounds terrific! My son and I both have terribly dry skin so I am excited to try!!

Lauren December 9, 2009 at 11:39 am

Thank you BeautyOlogy for turning me on to this! I am definitely going to start using this product. I’ve already recommended it to some friends of mine. Your blog is genius!!!

Catherine Porter December 9, 2009 at 11:43 am

Hi, Karen! It sounds great – I’d love to try it. I’ve only had pomegranate as a food or beverage before… ;)

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 11:51 am

Keep eating/drinking it, Catherine! It’s an amazing super food, and will do plenty for your skin inside as it will outside. I freely admit that I have never used pom infused skin products before this either, since I tend to shudder when I hear about the new miracle ingredient (don’t we all). I had a bit of a row with the rep from the product line I work with about an ingredient buzz word that I thought was easily dismissed (turns out I may be wrong on that whoops!) So I was really really pleasantly surprised to read more on pom and skin care, see results in independent clinical research trials and, most importantly, see this product work so well.

Liz December 9, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I definitely want to try this! The winter dryness has set in and my elbows, hands, and heels are feeling especially dull. Can’t wait to see if my itchy legs will go away for good!

Jean Riquelme December 9, 2009 at 12:43 pm

I’m a physician and am glad to see the comments regarding this product and PK–will try on some patients.

I am a massage therapist and love welda’s products, as do my clients. I am excited to hear there is a new one out there to try.

Robyn December 9, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I would love to try this oil my skin burns before I even get out of the shower from dry skin

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Robyn! Burns! That’s not good. What soap are you using? This may sound nuts, but try a baby shampoo that’s formulated as “no more tears” for a body wash (but please don’t use Johnson’s or even Jason’s Naturals, try to get an organic–Weleda has some great baby products, as does California Baby). The no more tears part is important because that means pH balanced, which is what you want to aim for. I suspect your body wash or soap is too alkaline for your skin, and is stripping away your natural oil. And if you are that dry that your skin burns, you don’t want to strip any more than necessary.
Please give that a try and let me know how it works for you!

Emily C. December 9, 2009 at 8:40 pm

This seems great… I would love to try it!

A Modern Hell December 9, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Hi NYCesthy,

Thanks for your reply. I have very sensitive, fair skin — I guess they call it combination skin, because it’s oily in some places, but then dry and flaky in others… so lucky me, the best of both worlds.

I have Eucerin dry skin moisturizing creme, but I rarely use it. I cleanse with Olay gentle face wash, but usually I end up not using moisturizers because they either irritate my skin or leave an unsightly sheen. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You sound like you know the territory!

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 10:36 pm

My friend, your skin sounds an awful lot like mine! First, you need the moisturizer, even if you are combo. And you especially need sunblock during the day–but with sensitivity, you need to stay away from anything that uses chemicals to block. The SPF should use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. Anything else in there could cause your skin to freak out. How often do you cleanse your skin? You should drop it down to once a day–only at night to get the dirt off, and then splash tepid water on your face in the morning. I hope you don’t mind, but I am going to email you so other thoughts privately. I am really not a fan of many products that are formulated for sensitive skin–there is plenty left in that irritate the skin. But keep in mind that bringing skin back into balance is a bit of a process, but it’s totally possible!

nycesthy December 9, 2009 at 11:04 pm

My legs too! Dry and itchy and gross white flakes! UGH. This product helped with that so much! Good luck!

Meghan December 9, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Awesome!

gingerrox December 10, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Sign me up! I didn’t remember until reading this that I had KP as a kid (on my arms and cheeks), which thankfully cleared up sometime in my 20s or so. I would have loved a product that actually worked rather than the harsh and relatively ineffective goop the dermatologist gave me.

My KP is better now but winter dry skin is never fun. Would love to try out this stuff!

charlie V December 10, 2009 at 6:04 pm
